Somewhat linked but not directly: I bought a Pepper Adams’ album the other day, well known but never heard by me - ‘10 to 4 at the 5 Spot’ recorded in 1958. During my first listen I was astonished to hear the track ‘The Long Two/Four’. Credited to Donald Byrd, it’s actually Keiko’s Birthday March complete with Elvin’s drum intro.
I love this post because even though it starts at promotional, it ends up being a history lesson and that’s why this Substack is so great
“make the rudiments, and by extension, the whole tradition of Western music, your own”: fabulous, and generally applicable to all arts!
