Hi vinnie, i commented about this on another post but i would really love to hear more drumming "firsts" (or at least first as far as we can tell). Some that i've wondered about are the first drummer to do the elbow-in-the-snare talking drum effect that's pretty common now, first drummer to trade with a non-drum instrument, the actual first person to put a rimshot on 4, but id be curious to hear of any "firsts" you're aware of!
Hi Erez, great idea!! Appreciate the idea, and thanks for reading…
Some of the firsts are debatable…for example Bill Goodwin strongly felt that Shelly Manne’s Un Poco Loco was the first free drumming. He’s certainly correct that it’s a great solo, and was recorded before La Roca Minor Apprehension…I’m going to explore that in a later post, as I think the two performances make an interesting juxtaposition…
Vinnie, I love what you're doing, particularly your attentiveness to the evolution of the language of drumming. One fascination of mine I'd love to hear your thoughts on is drummers who may not have had a restructuring influence on the lineage, but are sort of singular outliers. For example, Dave Tough or Billy Mintz. Related to the request I see here about your takes on bassists, I'd be interested in your takes on specific bass/drums partnerships that had deep and distinctive relationships, e.g. Mingus/Richmond, Tony/Ron...? Thanks.
Hi Reuben, thanks for the comment! Definitely something to talk about...great idea...wow to weigh in on the immortal partnerships...it would be great..just gotta get my chops up!! Thank you for reading and commenting!!!
Hi Mark, thanks for reading/thanks for asking. Can you be a little more specific? I think I know what you mean, but any more info about what you’d like to know would be great!
Okay, let's see...Maybe you could write about playing with someone you'd never met or played with before and then experienced an immediate musical connection with...Or write about how different bassists play/feel and time/pulse and what that is like for you, musically/creatively/emotionally...Or
discuss what qualities you like in some of your favorite bassists...
Oh wow, I'm super excited for the Jim Black thing! AlasNoAxis is one of my favourite bands ever!

Not sure if you have already done this, but I'd love to read about your interactions and adventures with bassists...You know, riddim section antics...
