Great stuff. My favorite Jim Gordon session is probably Richard “Groove” Holmes’s SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN. Gordon + Chuck Rainey + arrangements by Oliver Nelson, what a record.

I found out more about Jim Gordon after noticing that he’s on drums on Tom Waits’s “New Coat of Paint”, where he’s so subtle and brilliant. My post about Gordon led me to learn about Selvin’s book – thanks for reminding me about it. https://andrewjshields.blogspot.com/2023/12/jim-gordon-drummer-on-tom-waitss-heart.html

Great writing Vinnie. I have so enjoyed your Substack; so much so, I began my own! Anyway, your very human take on the two books, and the musicians lives, speaks very well about your own character and human-ness. Jim Gordon and John Guerin have been much on my mind of late. Both had some challenges, but WOW, the music they played on, and the beauty of their own musicality is simply stunning.
