Excellent dive into Mr. Blackwell's life and music. I remember driving over High Street by the campus of Wesleyan University where the drummer settled late in life and see him off for his walk. I thought "What a wonderful place to live with Ed Blackwell in the community!"
Undoubtedly one of the great masters of the drum set. I saw him in NYC in 1980 or ‘82 at a sparsely attended gig that I think may have been a matinee. It was a fascinating trio of Art Davis on bass, Olu Dara trumpet and Blackwell drums. During the intermission I was able to approach him briefly to offer my thanks for his beautiful playing and inspiration.

What a memory! Thanks Richard!
As much Blackwell as I've listened to, I've never checked out the American Jazz Quintet. Thanks Vinnie!
You’re welcome Ethan— didn’t know there was anything I’d heard that you hadn’t 🤣

Thanks for this story Bill. What we’d all give to hear that music now…very generous of you to share this memory!
Great information, delivered with a deep love of/for the subject.
Thanks for another good read, Vinnie!
Thank you for your attention and support Mark!
