See also Andrew Hill's "Lift Every Voice" session; the crack rhythm section with Richard Davis. The title track is along the the lines of a slow Afro-samba. The percussion part is intricate. As I understand it, Mr. Waits visited Brazil. The Mosaic Select MS-016 sessions are also worthwhile.

Thanks, Vinnie. You might also be familiar with Andrew's trio recording "Strange Serenade", which features Freddie, and the great bassist Alan Silva. A dream group of sorts; wide-open sounds. Alan lives in France, and is doing great!

Kenny Barron’s New York Attitude is a personal favorite. Burning trio with Waits and Rufus Reid!

Many thanks Vinnie! Here in Australia we’re so isolated from the international scene. During the 1980’s a concert by Chico Freeman’s group (live at Ronny Scott’s) was televised on public TV and it was amazing for us to see Freddie Waits playing. I still remember being blown away by his incredibly funky articulation. Thanks again

Great essay, vinnie. I feel inspired to revisit some of these and check out some new ones. Have you heard mustang by Donald Byrd?

Hi Max! Yes, Mustang is the first recording of Freddie and McCoy together, I listened to it for this essay but left it out as there were so many records already mentioned! Mustang is killing!

Picked up this LP while crate-digging over the holidays: organ trio, mainstream swing (i.e., the mid-50s Dixieland/swing sound typical of the Buck Clayton jam sessions), with Waits contributing shuffle ride throughout. Plus something that I think of as "smoothed out Vernel Fournier" -- is there a name for that rhythm with the left hand playing a rimshot on four and bongo-like eighths on two? And a gentle bossa rhythm on "Corcovado" -- this record is so groovy, Davis is locked in with Waits!

... thought of you... :-)

I think of that beat as a bongo beat or reverse bongo beat. The one you're describing I think of as 'reverse bongo beat' but that's only something I tell myself. Nice find, and thanks for sharing!! Great to hear from you Peter...

Thanks for your article. Freddie Waits is one of my favorite drummers.

Worth mentioning in his discography : Kenny Barron's trio album "Sunset to dawn, and Bunky Green's "Places we've never been" (among many others)
