thanks vinnie.. for anyone who wants to take a deeper dive into philly joes drumming, joerg eckel published a transcribed book of his work - the philly joe jones solo book..
Thanks for homing in on Evans’ California Here I Come album. Great PJJ and not referred to too often. I had the wonderful if somewhat bizarre experience of witnessing him with Bill Evans at Newport Jazz Festival at Ayresome Park (football stadium) Middlesbrough U.K. in July, 1978. The audience was separated from the performers by the width of the pitch, so the exact opposite to your imagined Village Vanguard experience but totally unforgettable.
I still associate Philly Joe Jones with that lovely crack on the snare on Kind of Blue. Clearly there is much more to his body of work. Thanks for this.
Somehow, I've missed the boat on Philly Joe––especially on his musical relationship with Bill Evans. I've heard most of his work with Miles but have missed his importance to the group sound (no matter who he plays with, Mr. Jones gives his full attention to the music). Thanks again, Vinny, for the music lesson.
I was lucky enough to see Philly Joe Jones quite a few times--what a wonderful drummer. And I also was lucky enough to have a long conversation with Jo Jones in a club in Dallas many, many years ago. He told some wonderful stories and was a very pleasant guy. The end of his break seemed to come too soon--but then I was able to hear him play again!

Thank you Jon!

Thanks for reading Jon. That’s Jimmy Cobb on Kind of Blue, so I’m guessing you meant Milestones…sorry to be so didactic, thanks for reading!
Ha! I sit corrected! And yes, should have known that, even with a cursory review of the lineup. Milestones was indeed the album.
