Excellent analysis, Vinnie. I used to own 3 of the 5 duos you cover (missing the C. T. and the Connie Crothers and have both the Shepp and Braxton duos on hatHut –– amazing that those live sets were recorded in a 24-hour+ period). The two recordings by Mr. Roach and Mr. Braxton are among my favorites & the Shepp duo is pretty darned good.

Great article! I love the (two) Mr. Roach's with Mr Braxton albums. The second is even better with better recording audio quality. I am really impressed that the time Mr. Roach had a stable position and salary make a step further for (even more) experimentation. Was it a coincidence or Mr. Roach's spirit led him to such choice? I am thinking in the present, people being famous less or more, do not keep evolving by saying stacked to a style and a secure norm of art making. This question also is for myself.....

Many interesting points here…I like the idea that Max used his relative stability from a teaching post to experiment further. Thanks George!

Thanks for this series on max roach very interesting I believe it was originally proposed to have Mingus play with Roach and Shepp on a tour however his battle with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis prevented it
